Our seas face growing threats from pollution, especially sewage contamination that harms marine life and the people who enjoy the water. Saltburn Beach is hosting a free event on Saturday, 16th May, starting at 9.30am, to raise awareness and support for cleaner seas. This event combines beach yoga, inspiring talks, and a paddle out protest with drumming circle to beat to the heart of the ocean. A chance to unite the community in protecting our oceans.
Whether you are a surfer, beach lover, or someone who cares about the environment, this event offers a chance to connect, learn, and take action. Here’s what you can expect and why your presence matters.

Join a gentle standing Beach Yoga flow in honour of the sea
The event begins with my good sea-loving self guiding 30 minutes beach yoga session designed to ground us and foster a deep connection with the natural surroundings. Practicing yoga on the sand, with the sound of the sea nearby, helps to calm the mind and body, yoga on the beach is my favourite place to practice.
The session is accessible to all skill levels and you'll be guided through a sequence of flowing yoga poses and breathing in fresh sea air, whilst appreciating the beauty of Saltburn’s coastline.

Why We Are Here: Talk by SAS Representative John R
After yoga, John, a representative from Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), will give a talk titled “Why We Are Here.” John will explain the urgent need to keep our seas safe and free from sewage pollution. He will share facts about how sewage affects marine ecosystems, surfers, and coastal communities.
John’s talk will highlight:
The impact of sewage spills on water quality and marine life
How pollution threatens public health and local economies
The role of community action in demanding cleaner seas
This talk offers valuable insight into the challenges facing our oceans and the power of collective effort to create change.
Discover Local Surfing History with Simon Palmer
Local legend Simon Palmer will present his second book, Views From The Pier, which explores the history of surfing and Saltburn’s unique coastal culture. His talk will take you through the evolution of surfing in the area, sharing stories of local surfers and the connection between the community and the sea, Simon always brings a spark of joy to everything he does and is quite a character, a good example of how the ocean keeps us young and joyful I'd say.
Simon’s presentation is a reminder of the deep roots surfing has in Saltburn and why protecting the water quality is vital for future generations to enjoy the sport and lifestyle.
Paddle Out Protest for Cleaner Seas
The event will culminate with a paddle out protest—a powerful and symbolic act where surfers and supporters paddle into the sea together. This peaceful demonstration raises awareness about the need for cleaner seas and urges authorities to take stronger action against sewage pollution, accompanied by drumming up the ocean's heartbeat.
The paddle out is open to all skill levels and is a chance to show your passion for the ocean. It’s a moment of solidarity, respect, and hope for a healthier marine environment.
Why Your Participation Matters
Joining this event means more than just attending a day at the beach. It’s about:
Supporting community efforts to reduce sewage pollution
Learning practical ways to protect the ocean and local beaches
Connecting with like-minded people who care about the environment
Amplifying the message that clean seas are essential for health, recreation, and wildlife
Every voice counts in the fight for cleaner seas. By showing up, you help build momentum for change.
How to Prepare for the Event
To make the most of the event, you might consider these tips:
Bring a yoga mat if you have one for the beach yoga session (we will be doing a standing session for 30mins so if you don't have a yoga mat and your comfortable on the sand go with that and get some extra sandy toes goodness)
Wear comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor activities
If you plan to join the paddle out, bring your surfboard or paddleboard (depending on conditions) and a wetsuit if needed, or maybe you're a sea-dipper and you'll don your swimming costume.
Arrive early if you're planning to join Yoga please arrive by 9.25am, you will find us to the right of the pier in front of Saltburn Surf Shop.
If you have a drum and would like to join the drumming circle to accompany the paddle out all drums welcome.
The event is free and open to everyone and your presence supports the cause. Look forward to seeing you there, many thanks, with love Chrissy x
